Community Games:
Moygownagh Community Games goes from strength to strength.  Following on from the accumulation of 13 county athletic medals and 5 talent show county titles. This year 8 children from the parish went to Athlone last weekend as part of an 80 strong Mayo team to compete in the HSE Community Games National Finals.  Eabha Gallagher and Kevin Murray were part of the Mayo Athletic squad.  Eabha, who was participating out of age, was Mayo’s hopeful for shott putt.  She threw a personal best in a very brave performance against a field of 24 seasoned national athletes.  Kevin wore the green and red vest as part of the Mayo team competing in the 7km marathon.  He finished in a respectable time of 26 minutes and was the first Mayo participant home.  The music group ( Oisin Carolan, Aoife Kelly, Barry Gaughan, Lucy Monaghan & Conor Diamond) competed against 14 very polished music groups from all over the country playing ’Hey brother & 500 miles’ came third.  This was a tremendous achievement and the group are definitely ‘Stars of the future’ as one spectator aptly described them.  Emily Murray competed in the recitation and made a return appearance as ‘Aggie’ in the J.P. McMenamen poem ‘Dancing round my handbag’.  She was awarded 2nd place for her efforts against 18 other competitors.  All these children deserve recognition for this achievement as it takes a lot of courage, commitment and effort to participate at National level.  To date only a handful of children from the area have secured All Ireland Community Games medals and a little bit of history was made this year as we have never had an act competing in the Talent Show at National Level.  Many thanks to all the parents who gave their time to attend practices and make the trek to Athlone.  A special word of thanks to Fiona Watts who prepared the music group and guided them to their success and also to their team manager, Ann Monaghan.  This has been Moygownaghs most successful year with the exciting addition of 6 National medals and we hope to build on this into the future.  A big thank you to everyone who helped out at the training of the track events—Alan Gaughan, James Carolan & Ann Gallagher.  We will be hosting an A.G.M in the coming weeks so we will need parents to attend the meeting to continue the success.
