CROSS COUNTRY 2014

Cross Country: On the 18th of September Carn N.S took part in the North Mayo schools cross country. Sinead Carolan ran in the 3rd and 4th class girls race.  She ran a tremendous race and did the school proud.  The 3rd and 4th class boys team was Eoin Finnerty, Cathal Davis, Shane Gallagher, Evan Regan, James Kelly, Paul Gallagher, Oisin Diamond and Dylan McAndrew.  They ran a very challenging race and just missed out on a team medal.  Next were the 5th and 6th class girls. The team consisted of Aisling Gaughan, Emily Murray, Ava McDonnell, Saoirse Gallagher, Eabha Gallagher, Aoife Kelly and Teresa Kelly. Aisling Gaughan ran an amazing race and came 1st. Emily Murray came 5th and Ava McDonnell came 12th. All the girls on the team ran brilliantly and the girl’s team retained the North Mayo Title for the third year in a row.  It was the last race of the day, the 5th and 6th class boys. The team was Barry Gaughan, Oisin Carolan, John McDonnell, Conor Diamond and Nathan Monaghan. It was a very fast race and Barry Gaughan secured 2nd place even though he was only in 5th class! All the team ran a phenomenal race.  Next up was the Mayo’s Cross Country which was on the 25th of September.  Barry Gaugan ran and came in a brilliant place of 17th.  The girl’s team was unfortunate to lose out on 3rd place by 6 points. Aisling was lucky enough to grab 5th place.  We wish her luck in the Connachts. Pictured here are the participants from Carn N. S. after the Cross Country event.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
What is WEEE?
WEEE, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment is anything that has a plug or a battery and is at the end of its useful life.  In the house, old and broken fridges and washing machines are examples but don’t forget the little guys! Remote controls, batteries, electric toothbrushes, electronic toys even your old bicycle lamps can also be recycled.  You would be surprised what items you have lying around the house that count as WEEE when they are no longer able to be used.  WEEE Ireland provide free collections in centralised locations throughout Mayo whereby the public can drop off items for recycling.  Ballina collection point is at Humbert street car park (beside Dunnes Stores) on Sat 27th September from 10am to 4pm.

Month of Action re Pylons and Turbines
A meeting was held in Portlaoise last weekend to share ideas regarding plans for a month of action against the National Renewable Energy Action Plan. As we know, Mayo has been zoned for a crazy 12,000 MWs of power, and Moygownagh in particular will bear the brunt of that with 180 massive turbines planned construction in or near the parish.
Most of the protest groups in Portlaoise were dealing with wind farms of 10-25 turbines and there was an audible gasp from the audience when they heard what was in store for this area. That is without mentioning the huge substation and hundreds of 45 meter high pylons that will follow. The environs of the parish is going to be a massive industrial landscape affecting us in ways that we can't even predict yet as no other community in Europe has a wind farm on the same scale on their doorstep.

We are urging people to inform themselves of what is planned for the area. Follow us on Moy Valley Protection Group or Moygownagh Substation Action Group on Facebook. Key actions are planned by all the groups in Portlaoise and more information regarding the MAYO protest will follow shortly. One upcoming action in Dublin is a protest outside the Dail with all the affected counties represented. If anyone is free to travel to Dublin on September 17
th to take part please email moyvalleypg@gmail.com to let us know and we will give you the details.

Community Games:
Moygownagh Community Games goes from strength to strength.  Following on from the accumulation of 13 county athletic medals and 5 talent show county titles. This year 8 children from the parish went to Athlone last weekend as part of an 80 strong Mayo team to compete in the HSE Community Games National Finals.  Eabha Gallagher and Kevin Murray were part of the Mayo Athletic squad.  Eabha, who was participating out of age, was Mayo’s hopeful for shott putt.  She threw a personal best in a very brave performance against a field of 24 seasoned national athletes.  Kevin wore the green and red vest as part of the Mayo team competing in the 7km marathon.  He finished in a respectable time of 26 minutes and was the first Mayo participant home.  The music group ( Oisin Carolan, Aoife Kelly, Barry Gaughan, Lucy Monaghan & Conor Diamond) competed against 14 very polished music groups from all over the country playing ’Hey brother & 500 miles’ came third.  This was a tremendous achievement and the group are definitely ‘Stars of the future’ as one spectator aptly described them.  Emily Murray competed in the recitation and made a return appearance as ‘Aggie’ in the J.P. McMenamen poem ‘Dancing round my handbag’.  She was awarded 2nd place for her efforts against 18 other competitors.  All these children deserve recognition for this achievement as it takes a lot of courage, commitment and effort to participate at National level.  To date only a handful of children from the area have secured All Ireland Community Games medals and a little bit of history was made this year as we have never had an act competing in the Talent Show at National Level.  Many thanks to all the parents who gave their time to attend practices and make the trek to Athlone.  A special word of thanks to Fiona Watts who prepared the music group and guided them to their success and also to their team manager, Ann Monaghan.  This has been Moygownaghs most successful year with the exciting addition of 6 National medals and we hope to build on this into the future.  A big thank you to everyone who helped out at the training of the track events—Alan Gaughan, James Carolan & Ann Gallagher.  We will be hosting an A.G.M in the coming weeks so we will need parents to attend the meeting to continue the success.
