Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
What is WEEE?
WEEE, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment is anything that has a plug or a battery and is at the end of its useful life.  In the house, old and broken fridges and washing machines are examples but don’t forget the little guys! Remote controls, batteries, electric toothbrushes, electronic toys even your old bicycle lamps can also be recycled.  You would be surprised what items you have lying around the house that count as WEEE when they are no longer able to be used.  WEEE Ireland provide free collections in centralised locations throughout Mayo whereby the public can drop off items for recycling.  Ballina collection point is at Humbert street car park (beside Dunnes Stores) on Sat 27th September from 10am to 4pm.

Month of Action re Pylons and Turbines
A meeting was held in Portlaoise last weekend to share ideas regarding plans for a month of action against the National Renewable Energy Action Plan. As we know, Mayo has been zoned for a crazy 12,000 MWs of power, and Moygownagh in particular will bear the brunt of that with 180 massive turbines planned construction in or near the parish.
Most of the protest groups in Portlaoise were dealing with wind farms of 10-25 turbines and there was an audible gasp from the audience when they heard what was in store for this area. That is without mentioning the huge substation and hundreds of 45 meter high pylons that will follow. The environs of the parish is going to be a massive industrial landscape affecting us in ways that we can't even predict yet as no other community in Europe has a wind farm on the same scale on their doorstep.

We are urging people to inform themselves of what is planned for the area. Follow us on Moy Valley Protection Group or Moygownagh Substation Action Group on Facebook. Key actions are planned by all the groups in Portlaoise and more information regarding the MAYO protest will follow shortly. One upcoming action in Dublin is a protest outside the Dail with all the affected counties represented. If anyone is free to travel to Dublin on September 17
th to take part please email moyvalleypg@gmail.com to let us know and we will give you the details.
